Course of Treatment
Consulting
With laser technology, the possibilities for corrective treatment have increased dramatically.
It is no longer necessary to use a scalpel, but instead a highly precise laser for eye operations.
After a complete eye examination and detailed presentation and review of the procedures available, we
determine the best choice together with you.
Operation
The operation itself is painless, takes only a few minutes, depending on the type of correction, and can
be carried out in an out-patient environment. After you've laid down on the op-table, you receive anaesthetic
eye drops from our op-personnel. An eyelid "gate" holds your eyelid gently open during the procedure.
You are covered with a sterile cloth. Your head is positioned underneath the laser. Now, the doctor views your eye
through an operating microscope.
Depending on the procedure, the surgeon detaches the cornea surface and cuts a flap that is laid back or removes the
surface layer of the cornea. Then, you are asked to look directly at a blinking light.
The laser beam dissipates the surface particles of the cornea. A computer automates the procedure, by steering the
laser to the exact positions previously determined by the ophthalmologist in the pre-examination. Don't worry, if you
inadvertently move your eyes; an eye-tracking mechanism follows them and directs the laser beam to the newly calculated
position.
The time needed to laser can be seconds to a few minutes, depending on the vision deficiency. The cornea is now moulded
for focused vision. The eye is rinsed. If a flap was made, it is placed again in position and acts as a natural plaster.
Post-Op Treatment
Guidelines to proper behaviour following the operation:
At home, after the laser treatment, you should rest a few hours.
Don't rub your eyes the following days. Don't exercise or play sports for three days that follow.
The next fourteen days don't apply cosmetics around the eye.
Sauna and extreme sports are tabu for one month.
Apply the eye drops prescribed by your doctor according to the instructions.
In all cases, go to your post-op examinations!
A laser treatment is an operative procedure. Therefore, there is no 100% guarantee that side-effects will not occur, even if only
very rarely. For this reason, the pre-op consulting appointment is very important.
Normally the wound heals within the first three days. In rare cases, however, it can take longer.
Increased light-sensitivity and the emergence of light halos around sources in the dark are not uncommon during the first few months.
Mostly however, these disturbances disappear on their own.
